no building taller than the tallest tree

  • no building taller than the tallest tree

Learning from earlier mistakes in planning new towns, Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, UK, was designed to be a "city in the trees". The concept was to build a place that people would be proud to call their home, a place with "no building taller than the tallest tree".

When my girlfriend's sister and her family moved there I became fascinated with the town. It felt like an area without any real landmarks, with maze like grid systems for roads and repetitive footpaths and parks that I'd easily become lost in. It didn't feel like it had any real identity, almost like a blank canvas, waiting for its people to make something of it.

The towns buildings grow larger than initially planned, taller than the flora it surrounds, and the first generation of true Milton Keynes inhabitants are be bringing up their own children in their home town.

As time goes on, these people will develop their own accents, an amalgamated of all those who came from all over the country to the city in the trees that never was.
